Toastmasters Club

What are meetings like?

Toastmasters Club meetings are all run essentially the same way. They are divided into three parts. The first part is called Table Topics and it is a chance to practice “speaking on your feet.” Each meeting has a theme and questions are asked based on the theme of the meeting. This is your chance to “volunteer” and speak right then and there and answer the questions.

The second part of the meeting is the prepared speeches part. This is where members prepare a speech from their speech manual and give a presentation which will enable them to reach their goal of getting to the next level in the Toastmasters Organization.

The third part of the meeting is the evaluation section. This is where the prepared speakers are evaluated and told what they did well and what they can improve upon in their speeches.

How long do meetings take?

MCC Toastmasters Club meetings are 4:45 until 6:00 every second and fourth Tuesday of the month.

How scary is this really?

The first time you get up to speak, it can be petrifying. Your heart beats fast your mouth goes dry and your stomach is somewhere it shouldn’t be. So, why do we come back? Because when we looked out there with  our knees knocking, we saw somebody hanging on every word, maybe somebody laughed at our joke and then we got applause. At the end of the meeting somebody spent minutes telling us what we did right even though we didn’t think we did anything right. And the next time we spoke we weren’t quite so terrified. For most of us, public speaking takes practice and for MCC Toastmasters, we can’t think of a more supportive place to practice.
